finding inspiration in the everyday

In the Hamptons March 21, 2012

I have certainly thought a trip to the Hamptons should go on the bucket list, how about you? I picture celebrity homes, Carrie Bradshaw laying out by the pool and catering provided by the Barefoot Contessa. In reality the closest I am getting anytime soon is the Hamptons, Columbia, SC 29209, back off Old Woodlands. Luckily there is a client who is seeking a classic coastal cottage type style.

Lets go room by room and put together the cottage home that transports this darling couple to a dreamy vacation spot each day.

Foyer, they already have a great start with an antique bench. I sandy neutral on the walls such as Macadamia or Nomadic Desert from Sherwin Williams would look great. Maybe a rug from Dash and Albert?

An entry should say something about you, so personal items are great. A light fixture that you LOVE or a piece of original art is a great way to show guests your personality right as they enter your home.

A study is to the left. A classic gray wall, an antique desk,  a natural fiber rug and bold fabric on upholstered club chairs with cozy ottomans to put your feet up and read a book. Shutters, woven blinds or draperies would complete the look.

Dining room, classic wainscoting in crisp white and a farmhouse style table are a great starting point. Lets add host and hostess chairs in a white and beige fabric is a more formal finish to a still comfortable entertaining space.

A white on white kitchen is this clients dream. A beadboard ceiling, white cabinets, classic hardware and maybe subway tile? I would love to see a butcher block island with a driftwood grayed stain and white quartz countertops. I love full, functional draperies in a kitchen or bathroom to add richness. The key to using one color is to add lots of texture. Pull together the perfect tone on tone look with a farmhouse sink, great rugs, tile, fabrics…all in different shades of white.

The den- the hub- needs= cozy, comfortable and to scale in the room. Dreaming of a light neutral sectional, grasscloth wallpaper, mix of finishes, this room should feel cozy and ready to entertain at a moments notice.

Master bedroom and bathroom should be an oasis. This suite should be all about spa like soothing with super soft bedding, light weight and colored fabrics and a calming wall color.

As a family grows so do the other bedrooms and baths. For now, lets carry the sandy neutrals upstairs mixed with the calming blues and greens of the sea.
